Amazon’s Alexa Now Comes with an Update for Answering Old Questions
It is a good news for Alexa users that the virtual assistant will now come with an answer update. This latest update will allow Alexa to answer old questions for which information was not available previously. The moment Alexa has the appropriate information, the user will be notified.
What is Amazon’s Alexa?
Just to give you a refresher course, Amazon’s Alexa is a virtual assistant. It was first used for the Amazon Echo and the Amazon Echo Dot Smart Speakers. But now it is also available for iOS and Android too. While its major function is to trigger online shopping at Amazon, it can also enable music playback, stream podcasts, play audiobooks, develop to-do lists, set alarms, provide weather and traffic information, and relay sports news and other real-time information. Reports also show that only a small number of people actually use Alexa for online shopping.
The Answer Update
The latest update for the ‘old questions’ feature was first discovered by a blog known as Voicebot. A user requested information regarding a news item. Alexa then responded by saying that it can sometimes not have the required information. The virtual assistant proceeded to ask if the user would like to activate the Answer Updates feature. The user next asked Alexa to clarify the Answers Updates. Alexa responded that if it has been asked a question and the answer is unavailable but is found, later on, the user will be notified.
In the previous versions of Alexa, if the answer was unavailable, the assistant would state that it does not have the answer but is always learning. There would be a variety of other ways the same thing was told to a user seeing some kind of information.
However, the users will now be immediately informed via an on-device notification as soon as their previously required information is available.
How to Activate the Answers Update Feature?
An Amazon spokesperson admitted that the prompt will be offered randomly to the customers. They further explained that the feature will be triggered if Alexa is asked a factual question and the assistant does not have the answer yet.
If users want to check whether their device gas the Answers Update or not, they can simply ask Alexa to turn on the Answers Update. If the device supports the feature, it will be turned on. It will be rolled out to users of Alexa over the next week.
If you are a regular user of the Amazon’s Alexa, then you will definitely benefit from this additional feature. Since the feature is optional, one can decide to deactivate if required. For example, many people don’t appreciate being disturbed by unwanted on-device notifications.
Generally, this new update makes the Amazon virtual assistant even smarter. Whether you belong to a small number of people using Alexa for online shopping or the larger faction using it for its voice-activated skills, your assistant just got better.
