Amtrak Pacific Surfliner partners with MLB to promote awareness of rail safety
As part of the Rail Safety Month and the United States Rail Safety Week, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner is partnering with California Operation Lifesaver (CAOL) and two Southern California Major League Baseball (MLB) teams such as the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Angels to raise awareness of safety around train tracks.
The partnership was announced by Amtrak last week Wednesday, September 5, 2018.
The Pacific Surfliner‘s educational events will take place on Sunday, September 16 at Angel Stadium and on Monday, September 17 at Petco Park, where rail safety experts from CAOL will offer valuable tips on how to stay safe around railroad tracks in the Southern California counties, including San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Ventura, San Barbara, and San Luis Obispo.
“It’s critical that we work together to educate the public on ways to keep themselves and their loved ones safe around train tracks,” Bryan MacDonald, a chairman of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency, which oversees the Pacific Surfliner service, said in a press release. “Walking, jogging, and taking pictures on or near railroad tracks are all illegal activities that are extremely dangerous and should always be avoided.”
CAOL, which is also partnering with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), has declared September as Rail Safety Month in California. The U.S. Rail Safety Week across the nation will run from September 23 to 29, 2018.
Accidents and incidents on railroad tracks can be avoidable by taking precautions and following safety rules through education, engineering, and enforcement. CAOL has received $205,525 in a fund from FRA for rail safety public awareness campaigns that focus on efforts to promote preventions of a collision, injury, and fatality for pedestrians, according to Operation Livesaver, Inc.
“In baseball, you always have to run to first base and stay within the lines,” Angels pitcher Andrew Heaney said, urging people and fans to comprehend the importance of safety. “It’s the same with trains. Remember to cross train tracks only at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings, and obey all posted warning signs and signals.”
