Cleveland Cavaliers win the 2022 bid to host NBA All-Star game
The National Basketball Association announced on Thursday, November 1 that the Cleveland Cavaliers have been granted to host its 71st NBA All-Star Game, which will take place at newly-renovated Quicken Loans Arena on February 20, 2022. The last time the Cavaliers hosted its events in Cleveland was on February 9, 1997, when the league honored the 50th anniversary at the time.
“Cleveland is a passionate sports city with a proven track record of hosting large-scale, global event,” NBA Commissioner Adam Sliver said in a statement. “We thank Dan Gilbert, Len Komoroski and the civic leaders for their commitment, and we look forward to a weeklong celebration of our game.”
Cleveland will host three-day All-Star Weekend events, which feature exhibition games and competitions, including Celebrity Game, Rising Stars Challenge, Skills Challenge, Three-Point and Slam Dunk contests and NBA All-Star game. The NBA will provide fans access to NBA players, legends and celebrities at venues for several events in the surrounding area.
The NBA will also host NBA Cares events, the league’s social responsibility program that oversees service projects, basketball clinics and games, and fitness and nutritional activities. The league will continue to partner collaboratively with schools, government and local nonprofit organization and provide resources to community-based programs for thousands of children and families.
The city expects to generate approximately $100 million from these All-Star Weekend events, according to Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish. The Quicken Loans Arena renovation work is still in progress and is set to be completed in 2019 of August.
Sports executives and local community partners have been working to bring these major events back to Cleveland. As the Cavaliers started off early with a 1-8 record, the team should be able to focus on rebuilding a team through the draft, free agency or trade to acquire all-star talents for the 2021-22 season, which will be the year marking the 75th anniversary of the NBA.
The city of Charlotte is scheduled to host the All Star game on Sunday, February 17, 2019. NBA All-Star game will be held in Chicago on February 16, 2020, and in Indianapolis on February 14, 2021, respectively.
