Met Gala 2018
When it comes to fashion events and fundraising, there is no bigger and more important event than the Met Gala. The goal is to raise as much money as possible for the Met’s Costume Institute. It is being held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, always the first Monday in May. This tradition was founded by the publicist Eleanor Lambert, and the first fundraiser from this type was held in 1948. The target was the NY high society and this was the event that encouraged them to make donations. Today’s fundraising event is much more spectacular and modern. It is being attended by the most famous faces from the fashion, film, music and art industry. All together in one place, they are raising money for the Institute and celebrate its latest exhibitions which are always covered by a certain theme. Well, last night’s exhibition theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and Catholic Imagination. As it is well known, since 1995, the whole event has been directed and chaired by Anna Wintour – the US Vogue editor-in-chief. Every year, she enlists famous persons to co-chair with her. For last night’s 70th anniversary of the Met Gala Event, right next to Wintour were Amal Clooney, Rihanna, and Donatella Versace.
This year’s theme Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination featured around 40 Vatican vestments and accessories that gathered together the time of 15 papacies. The exhibition covered pieces and items that have never left Vatican possession before. The sponsor of the exhibition was, of course, Donatella Versace. As expected, this Met Gala was the most controversial one so far because it allowed mixing and positioning fashion garments alongside important artifacts. The curator Bolton who was in charge of securing the important Vatican pieces explained that although some might seem that fashion is inappropriate to be combined with the sacred, it was the dress that became a center of every religion. In addition to his explanation, Wintour elaborated that fashion is so powerful and influential and it affects all of us. Different understanding of the fashion from the people around the world is what is amazing and unique.
The beginning of the Met Gala 2018 was the famous red carpet that everyone eagerly awaited. Fashion designers had the opportunity to their best and boldest creations according to the theme, and provide the celebrities with suitable attire. It is safe to say that they outdid themselves, diving strongly into the Vatican theme. The fashion crowd is going mad about Rihanna’s look and again, she won the Gala. Working with John Galliano, they both channeled the grandeur of the Catholic vestments in a cream gown, full of jewels and flowing overcoat. The bishop’s hat was an accessory that certainly was the winner. Sarah Jessica Parker with D&G went big too, in a golden gown with ornaments and a huge headpiece. Among other stars, LJO did not disappoint either. She wore Balmain and looked heavenly. Blake Lively’s choice was Atelier Versace gown and Louboutin shoes. Joan Smalls looked divine in golden Tommy Hilfiger gown.
This Met Gala was golden, shiny and heavenly indeed!
