Odeon of Herodes Atticus is one of the oldest theaters in the world. From its origin to date, it has hosted a great number of theatrical events, musical concerts and other social and political events. Celebrities like Elton John and Maria Callas have held shows in this theater. It is a historical site that reflects Greek heritage in its best form. History Of Odeon of Herodes Atticus
It used to have huge stone walls and an expensive wooden roof made from Lebanese Cedarwood. This epic theater was completed back in 161 A.D. by Herodes Atticus, who was a mogul in Athens. Atticus built this theater in the loving memory of Aspasia Annia Regilla, his beloved wife. It had a capacity to host a crowd of as many as 5000 people. The original theater was destroyed in the 267 A.D. during the Heruli invasion.
Modern History Of Odeon of Herodes Atticus
It was renovated back in 1950, with Pentelic marble for the orchestra and audience stands. In the modern age, it has become an open-air theater. It hosts an annual Athens Festival from May to October, every year. Many Greek and international artists give performances in front of a packed cheering crowd. International artists, including Sting, Andrea Bocelli, Sylvie Guillem, Frank Sinatra, Edith Hamilton and more, have performed at this historic site over the years, since its restoration. The seating capacity today for the theater is around 4,700 people.
