Palau de la Música Catalana – A Musical Wonderland
Palau de la Música Catalana is situated in Barcelona, Catalonia province of Spain. Lluís Domènech I Montaner designed this theater back in 1905. It was completed around 1908 and since then, it has been one of the principal theater buildings in Spain. Back in 1908, it was specially designed for the choir of Barcelona, which still performs at the theater, by the name of Orfeó Catalá.
Carrer Palau de la Música is home to the great Palau de la Música Catalana Theater. It is situated in an old Barcelonan sector called Casc Antic. You will find yourself at this theater after making your way through the tight bustling streets of the La Ribera area.
Catalan modernism reflects vividly in the design of Palau. Dynamic contours are a highlight of the theater, as curves run down over straight lines and rich floral decorations are major features of the overall design. The design, as compared to other buildings, is focused on rationality. That is, it makes full use of space, structure, and technology to its advantage. It displays one of the very first curtain wall designs. The building materials used were chosen specifically to reflect the Catalan culture. Palau is famous for its decorative structural elements. Sunshine brings out the unmatched beauty of the theater as it highlights its bright colors and ornate mosaics. Catalan people feel that it exudes their spirit, which is modern and open-minded.
The true gem of the theater is its concert hall. It covers the largest space of the building. It can serve an audience of above two thousand people. It has a glass roof with majestic crystal designs. This hall is host to several recital events and concerts.
This hall was custom made for musical events, in 2004. It has more of a modernized architectural feel. The area, however, is less and can accommodate only 538 people. It is highly regarded for its acoustics, which truly accents the quality musical concerts held in the hall. Some might say that the small amount of seats, makes for a more intimate affair.
It is difficult to get into most of the areas in the theater, without the ticket for a guided tour. However, it is an economical way of experiencing the beauty of this amazing theater, as musical concerts will cost you way more. The interior will simply mesmerize you. It has a wide array of colors that complement each other, one that you must see to understand.
To start off this category, I wanted to list some of the most culturally important theaters around the world. This one made my list, along with many others which will be covered in a series of upcoming articles.
