The Queen of Soul’s fashion style
Another great name in the music industry has left this world. The Queen of Soul as many referred to her as, Aretha Franklin, has passed away on Thursday, August 16. She was known to the world not just for her vocal capabilities, but for her original appearance too. Changing, experimenting and trying many new fashion styles and looks during her long career has presented her as a driving force for the diversity even back in the ‘80s. Her fashion experiments started in the ’60s and ‘70s. That was the time when girl groups and lots of glitters were trending. But, Franklin was the one to try and perform in slinky silhouettes that came along with additions like fur or feathers. Since then onwards, she has always been original and unique in choosing her clothes, sometimes depicting a current political climate, and sometimes just being a plus size fashion icon. Here is a fashion throwback to Franklin’s best appearances through her six-decade career.
For a portrait, Franklin appeared in a form-fitting cream pencil dress with side split and cream mary jane pumps.
For another portrait, the singer chose embellished kaftan with bell sleeves.
While holding a Grammy award, Franklin was photographed in a gold embroidered gown.
At a concert in 1972, Franklin was showing her curves in navy blue and gold dress with high slit.
Flaunting her curves, again, at the 10th Annual Music Awards, Franklin was dressed in a strapless sequined gown.
That was the time to bring back the feathers, in powdery blue and lots of them!
The performance at the Chicago theater was accompanied by a black sleeveless dress, with sequined stones on the top and black ruffles down.
Franklin wore a design from Arnold Scaasi and mixed yellow and blue.
When everyone has forgotten about the prints, Franklin wore the mix of leopard and zebra on a jacket, over a minidress.
On the inauguration of the American president Bill Clinton, Franklin wore an extravagant fur coat over a red dress.
On the 39th Annual Grammy awards, the singer wore a cream dress with a matching fur coat.
Bringing back the color, Franklin wore a fuchsia and black patterned gown with the same shawl and black sandals with straps.
At another inauguration, this one for the president Barak Obama, Franklin looked fabulous in an all grey look that was consisted of a coat, gloves, and hat with shiny details on the attached bow.
Another great look comes from the Candie’s Foundation event where Franklin wore an off-the-shoulder black satin gown. The look was completed with elegant and classy white pearls necklace and earrings. Again the same year, the singer wore a white one-shoulder gown with long pearls necklace.
The effortless chic has never looked so good as it did on Franklin’s appearance on the 102nd White House Correspondents Association dinner. The Singer looked marvelous in a shimmering soft gold caftan.
Looking modern, fashionable and chic as always, one of Franklin’s last appearances was at the 2017 Tribeca Film festival where she wore an exquisite white ball gown, with discreet flower motifs.
It is safe to say that Aretha Franklin will be missed for both her vocal capabilities and fashion choices.
