Bali is one of the most well-known travel destinations in the world. The influx of tourists has been on the rise since the 1980s. Bali is appreciated for its arts like traditional and modern dancing, sculpture, painting, and music. Leather and metalworking is quite a significant part of the culture as well. The Indonesian International Film Festival is also an attraction every year for this island. TripAdvisor categorized Bali as the top destination of the world in its Traveler’s Choice Award in 2017.
However, this week Bali and Lombok have become a point of apprehension for many travelers. The islands were hit by a devastating earthquake at the week’s beginning. A 6.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the islands of Bali and Lombok; leaving at least 98 dead and over 200 injured. Another aftershock followed, which was of 5.2 magnitudes. An evacuation operation is underway to help the tourists residing in the island’s resorts.
The residents along with the tourists are badly shaken. The earthquake has caused many travelers to reconsider their plans of visiting the islands. While no tourists have been reported among the dead, the death toll is expected to rise as the rescuers clear the debris.
Safety of Traveling to Bali and Lombok
It is advised against to travel to Bali and Lombok right now. More aftershocks are expected. These can cause additional damage to the building and risk the safety of people on the islands.
Another reason why travelers should wait for things to settle down is the difficulty of medical assistance.
